This thesis introduces two innovative computational methods, named PocketNet and FusionDock, aimed at improving protein-ligand docking predictions. PocketNet utilizes existing pocket prediction tools to create an ensemble of putative pockets which are then reranked by a deep neural network. Uniquely, the network incorporates ligand information to accurately and selectively identify the correct pocket. This approach can be combined with a traditional docking tool in order to dock ligands to a full protein without knowledge of the binding pocket. FusionDock is a generative deep learning model which aims to replace the docking search function by sampling ligand poses with non-equilibrium dynamics. The model incorporates specific physical priors to reduce overfitting, enhance generalization, and to generate physically meaningful structures. Both methods demonstrated state-of-the-art results when evaluated on an unseen test set and compared against benchmarks. The introduction of these tools provides new insights and marks an advancement in accurate and efficient protein-ligand docking.

Personal Motivation of Matthew Masters

My path to drug sciences was sparked by an early interest in how computers can revolutionize healthcare and medicine.
<![CDATA[
We are happy to provide an overview of the 2023 8th YPG Pharm Apero, in Basel. The Pharm Apero is an established platform to engage and update pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientist on potential career paths. Sharing Information as well as networking, discussing and reviewing options in an informal environment are an excellent opportunity to reflect on career paths as well as learning from first hand experience. This year young pharmaceutical scientists provided insights on their area of expertise, relevant topics that safeguarded this specific path as well as regrets on missed opportunities during the studies. Among others the topics *Patient safety through real-world evidence generation: Epidemiology in the pharmaceutical industry *Insights into API Process Development, Production and Quality Management at DOTTIKON *Career as Scientist: basic, applied and SMART research were presented and discussed in animated Q&A sessions. In addition SSIP (Swiss Society of industrial Pharmacists) provided an overview on the support for pharmacists throughout their University Studies as well as choosing and deciding for specific career paths. Some recurring themes to ensure success were „Networking, Persistence, Internships, Self Awareness, Presence on social media“. With this the event closed with an „Apero Riche“ to exchange, discuss and enjoy the beautiful location. The GSIS would like to thank YPG for the good collaboration and the opportunity to support pharmacists, pharma scientists to plan for their career path.

]]>

<![CDATA[
As an integral part of the M.Sc. Drug Sciences program at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Basel, students conduct a master’s thesis either within the University or in Industry.

The thesis provides students with a unique opportunity to apply and expand their scientific skills in the fields of pharmaceutical research and gain valuable insights into research structures and processes. The master’s thesis

project is conducted within 10 months during the 3rd and 4th study semester, although the project start can be set individually (most students start in summer or fall). The thesis is concluded with a written report and an oral exam, which takes place after submission of the thesis and includes a presentation of their work and a colloquium.

Importantly, the conditions to perform a master’s thesis have been designed to facilitate a placement in the pharmaceutical industry. For example, the thesis will not be published, the exam is not public, and only one faculty member of the department is involved in the committee alongside the local supervisors and the candidate. Many students already conduct their thesis in industry groups, but the interest is usually higher than the available positions.

As industry representatives, we the members of GSIA can support the university’s efforts to educate the next generation of pharmaceutical researchers by proposing master’s thesis projects that cover different areas.

Thereby, we have the unique opportunity to mediate industry experience to the students and support their career decision-making.

Please feel free to visit the homepage of the department, which provides examples of currently proposed master’s thesis topics:

https://pharma.unibas.ch/de/education/msc-drug-sciences/masters-theses-in-drug-sciences/

In case of interest, please send a brief, general project outline (2-3 sentences) to studienkoordination-pharma@unibas.ch. The event closed with a nice opportunity to exchange with Takeda Operational staff.

With more than 700 employees, Takeda Neuchâtel is one of the ten largest employers in the Canton of Neuchâtel and one of the benchmark biopharmaceutical production sites in Switzerland. Active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the site employs a wide range of professionals trained in biotechnologies and their application in industrial production. Takeda Neuchâtel produces three drugs that treat two types of blood clotting disorders or deficiencies: - Factor VIII: It is a protein necessary for the blood coagulation chain. This protein is missing or deficient in patients with hemophilia A, the most common and well-known form of blood clotting disorders and deficiencies. - Factor VIII 'long lasting': This is a long-acting version of Factor VIII in the patient's body. - Von Willebrand Factor: It is a protein necessary for the blood clotting chain. This protein is missing or deficient in patients with Von Willebrand's disease, a rare and still underdiagnosed form of blood clotting disorders and deficiencies. Takeda Neuchâtel is the only biotechnology site in the world to produce the Von Willebrand Factor protein in the form of a recombinant product. It is a particularly complex and sensitive molecule. It took years of research and development to perfect its manufacturing process and to successfully produce it on an industrial scale. Von Willebrand Factor is the largest recombinant molecule produced at an industrial level. As such, Takeda Neuchâtel has a unique expertise in the world, developed over more than twenty years, which makes it a center of excellence recognized worldwide.

]]>

<![CDATA[

]]>
